Help Promote HeroicStories!

We've received many great ideas to help promote HeroicStories. Many of them are grassroots ideas that readers have been asking for so that they can help "spread the word". Some say "word of mouse" is best -- your own words in recommending HeroicStories to your friends. But if you need some help to get started, or would like to print out cards to give out, we have some suggestions for you below.

If you'd like to submit other ideas, send them to our Comments address. Thanks, we look forward to reading them. If you'd like to discuss ideas with other HeroicStories readers, why not join the HeroTalk discussion group? See you there!

HeroCards

A reader suggested that we have cards that people can hand out to recognize the heroes among us. The result? The HeroCard!.

Here are a couple of cards readers submitted that you can download, print and distribute freely to people you think deserve a little recognition, or those who you think would benefit from reading HeroicStories.

Download PDF version. Note: several of these cards are supplied with each HeroicStories book or lapel pin.

The Microsoft Word and Adobe PDF documents are formatted for Avery business card stock. Of course you can print them onto regular paper or cardstock and cut to size. We used Avery form 8371, a plain white card stock, but any compatible form should do quite nicely. This stock has ten 2 x 3.5 inch cards per sheet, with no gutters. If you print in Adobe PDF, be sure to turn off the "Fit to Page" option.

Quotes and Signatures

Many readers have been using quotes which promote HeroicStories in their e-mail signatures. Here are a few we've seen, please feel free to use any of these!

We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee. -- Marian Wright Edelman (1939-, American Lobbyist on Behalf of Children)

Thanks to Carolyn of Pennsylvania, for suggesting the following phrase, which we liked so much we added it to our home page:

Restoring Faith in Humanity... one story at a time.

E-mail

One of the best methods of "getting the word out" is reader referrals; or as some like to put it, "word of mouse". Paula shared with us this e-mail that makes a great template for telling your friends and acquaintances about HeroicStories:

This isn't something I usually do, but I wanted to share a website with you: www.heroicstories.com. If you subscribe, you will receive e-mail containing uplifting stories of everyday heroes. I highly recommend this. I'm a little embarrassed to say it, but I often find tears in my eyes while reading these stories. (Of course, I am a cry-at-movies type of girl!)

Quoted from their website:

Tired of all the bad "news that's fit to print"? Here's your alternative! HeroicStories are about everyday real people who step up to the challenge and help others when they are needed. They're not just about people who save lives or stop a crime. Our stories describe both large and small gestures, they're from all over the world, they're true and, most of all, they're interesting. (They're also short! No story is over 500 words.)

I hope you are interested, but if you're not, please accept my apology for bothering you.

Michael, from British Columbia, Canada, provided us with this preamble to an issue he forwarded to to his colleagues:

The following is a sample of a newsletter that I receive twice a week. The stories told inside are all true, and always depict some heroic act. The heroic act can be quite small, a kind word that turns someone's perspective on the day around. Or it can be quite large, as in the case of a rural New York county's firefighter squad who repaired and refitted and old pumper truck they had retired, and donated it to a small town Canadian squad they "adopted". Following the story is editor and reader comments from previous stories.

If you like it, please consider subscribing. It doesn't cost anything, it's spam free, and is a wonderful pick me up a few times a week. If you think the daily news is all about bad things happening, it's time to read about good things.

Public Postings With Tear-Offs

Catherine suggested on the HeroTalk discussion group:

... there is an alternative of printing the whole e-mail (minus your contact information) and add tear off sections on the bottom that list the website. You can then post them at most grocery stores and such. I have been amazed at the response (the number of slips torn off) ...
