Reader Comments, Part 4
Still more of the many, many comments we have received
in response to HeroicStories:
- I've been disabled with degenerative disc disease since '91. In '92
and again in '93 I had failed spinal fusions, almost dying from the first one,
but am still told I'm able to work. Some mornings it's difficult to even sit
in front of the computer before I try driving to work, but your stories make
it worth signing online. Thanks very much for the hard work you put into this
service, attempting to show everyone that there really are good people out
there. --"G", Ontario, Canada
- I cannot but agree with other readers' comments that it is high time
for the good to take over the world. One of your readers recently stated that
(s)he stopped reading newspapers because of the way the news is presented. I
cannot agree more with that, and have not bought a single newspaper for the
past two years, because of the same reason. I did not think that this
publication will ever fall into the "syrupy sweet" category, nor did I ever
think it would be a dumb idea. I does give the reader that warm glow of
satisfaction, to realise that you are not the only person that want
good to over come the bad. --At, South Africa
- I have loved the illustrations of quiet heroism that you have shown in
each of us, because once we have read the stories it's impossible to go back
to an uncaring selfish life -- and I'm sure you knew that when you first had
the idea. I thank you for making me think and feel. (PS: I know of at least 3
people in my workplace alone who have subscribed after I forwarded them an
issue -- and I have sent many more to my other e-correspondents around the
country.) --Nancy, Virginia
- You have made a difference to my life and I want to thank you.
--Deena, South Africa
- I was struck by the comments by readers -- and still am! I really do
think that it's you getting the readers involved, in comments and
encouraging their own submissions, that keep it such a vibrant and involving
message. It doesn't come close to any other 'newsletter' I've seen.
--Emma, England
- I've often wanted news just like this, as an antidote to all the mayhem
and squalor that generally passes as "news". --Dave, location not given
- My nephew in Oklahoma was forwarding stories to most of my family and a
lot of his friends. Your stories are so great and so interesting, that I
finally subscribed myself. I always look forward to reading each story.
--Sally, California
- What fun to see stories about how people were profoundly touched by
just a simple action. One type touches a soft spot: how a caring adult
impacted the life of a child. In this often petty and egocentric world of
adults that we live in, its easy to lose sight of the children who would give
their right arm for just a little of an adult's time and consideration. I
think I'll knock off work early today and spend that time with my kids.
--Dale, California
- I just wanted to say I have really been affected by your newsletter.
The stories and the comments from readers are done so well, straightforward,
direct -- none of the mush I had almost expected when I first checked it out
months ago. My new year's resolution is to try and make a difference in
people's lives wherever I can. And of course that is completely due to
HeroicStories. I hope that someday someone will think of me -- anonymously or
otherwise -- and feel that maybe I made a small difference for them. Thank you
for helping me see that it is possible in so many ways. --Laura, Iowa
- I think your column makes it clear to readers that our global
decision-makers don't speak for the vast majority of people who just want to
live a peaceful life, with family, productive work, fun and health as central
aspects. I would wager that many an American's opinion of our "enemies" would
change if we could somehow communicate on this personal level, and vice-versa.
Maybe we should send a bunch of these stories to our "world leaders" so they
know what's really important. --Steve, Virginia
- I'm a divorced mom of 2 boys ages 6 and 12, I work full time outside
the home, and I own my home which means work, work, work. It's real easy to
get on the pity-pot about being so busy and so tired, so I enjoy reading
HeroicStories to remind myself that I have a good life and that I have nothing
to complain about. Many many people in this world are not so fortunate. The
success stories lift my spirits and get me thru a long evening after a long
day's work. The compassionate stories urge me to strive to be a kinder, better
person. Life is not easy, each day is a battle of some sort, but HeroicStories
helps make the day better and remind us to be ever conscience of who we are
and what we are giving back to our World!! --Linda, Florida
- I don't know if you'll stop any wars but your stories sure let the
readers know that people all over the world are the same. You read in the
papers about the few bad ones so sometimes you forget the millions of regular
people who make civilization work. The reason they don't make the news is that
there are so many of them. People who go out of their way to help a
stranger, return a lost item, risk their lives to save another are not rare.
Your stories remind us of what we sometimes forget. --Dave, Florida
- In your comments section, Dave from Florida wrote "I don't know if you
will stop any wars, but...." You will stop wars. You will make a difference,
you HAVE made a difference. Other than the second coming there will be no one
event that will shake mankind's conscience and cause us to regain our moral
fiber and make the world better. This change will occur in the millions of
individual lives as they grow up and experience life and receive "positive
uplifting experiences" that touch their hearts, soften their spirits and
solidify their resolve to do what is right. Positive influences such as your
wonderful column help fill in the gaps left by the lack of good parental
influence. We desperately need men and women of good character and moral fiber
such as yourself. You are a part of the good conscience of the world. Your
work is essential, uplifting and a positive influence to so many lives. You
will never know the total range of good influence your work will have, and
that is not important. What is important, is that it does, and that you keep
on doing it. --Scott, Hawaii
